For species seen in 2020 that had less than or equal to 100 records, full details are included; for more common species, the earliest, latest and highest count by vice-county are shown. The narrative for each species is taken from the main Hantsmoths website, and it is possible that some information on abundance and occurrence can get out of date, as it is impossible to keep up with all changes; however it should give a good introduction to each species. The tables in each species account summarise the previous status, and that for the current year.
For the maps, all records prior to 2020 are shown by a blue dot (the larger the dot, the more recent), with the current year's records shown in red. As previous records are superimposed on any report for 2020, new sites have greater emphasis (i.e. will show as 'more red').
In the species accounts, an asterisk next to a location indicates a new 10km square record; earliest ever dates are highlighted in orange, and latest ever in red. 70.141 [B&F: 1862] Double-striped Pug Gymnoscelis rufifasciata (Haworth, 1809) - Common
Common in parks, gardens, hedgerows, roadside verges, heathland, moorland and woodland throughout the British Isles. Widespread and very common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 15-19 mm. Straightforward to identify, a good diagnostic feature is the strength of the two forewing fasciae, which are heavy in the costal half, and faint in the dorsal half. Larva feeds on the foliage of woody plants such as Holly, Ivy, Gorse, Broom, Heather, Rowan and Traveller's-joy, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in parks, gardens, hedgerows, scrub and woodland throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight fairly common throughout, appearing to favour Hemp-agrimony and Clematis. Wingspan 14-19 mm. Unmistakable, but green may fade to yellow. Larva feeds on flowers of many different plants, including Dog-rose, Hawthorn, Hemp-agrimony, Clematis, Hawthorn, Bramble, Elder, Wild Angelica, Mugwort and Goldenrod, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in mature hedgerows, scrub and woodland edges throughout much of England. In Hampshire larvae recorded in numbers from blackthorn in the past, but rather uncommon to light, mostly in the New Forest, and occasionally elsewhere in the county and on the Isle of Wight, where recorded in numbers in some years. Wingspan 17-19 mm. Similar to Green Pug P. rectangulata, but that species has postmedian line strongly toothed near costa, and Sloe Pug usually has salmon-pink (black in Green Pug) band at base of abdomen. Larva feeds on flowers of Blackthorn, over-wintering as an egg.

Common in parks, gardens, hedgerows, scrubland and woodland throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight common and widespread. Wingspan 17-21 mm. Unmistakable, but green coloration may fade, when sinuate apical border to central band is a helpful character. Larva feeds on flowers of Apple, Pear, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Wild Cherry and Japanese Cherry, over-wintering as an egg.

Nationally scarce (Nb) on heathland, moorland and open woodland in southern England. In Hampshire very local amongst the foodplant in open woodland in the New Forest, Alice Holt and Pamber Forest. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight since 1981. Wingspan 17-19 mm. Fairly unmistakable, although could be confused with Green Pug P. rectangulata. Larva feeds on Bilberry, over-wintering as an egg.

Local in open woodland, scrub, hedgerows and gardens on alkaline soils throughout England and Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight well distributed on the chalk, more thinly in the north-east and New Forest. Wingspan 12-14 mm. Plain appearance, small size and lack of discal spot distinguishes adult from all but Lead-coloured Pug E. plumbeolata from which separated by ochreous base of the abdomen. Larva feeds on flower buds of Traveller's-joy and Cultivated Clematis, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in damp woodland, scrub, fens, sand-dunes, marshes, gravel pits and gardens throughout the British Isles; fairly common and well distributed in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 14-16 mm. A fairly small, plain brown pug with a prominent, roundish, black central spot, most likely to be confused with Maple Pug E. inturbata, which is paler, more ochreous and has three dark patches along the termen. Larva feeds within catkins of Goat Willow, Grey Willow and Eared Willow, over-wintering as an egg.

In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight rather uncommon, especially in the New Forest and on the Island. Wingspan 13-15 mm. The most likely confusion species is Slender Pug E. tenuiata, which see for differences. Larva feeds on flowers of Field Maple, over-wintering as an egg.

Common in calcareous grassland, rough ground and gardens throughout the British Isles; present in most of Hampshire, but distinctly uncommon on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 16-20 mm. The main confusion species is Foxglove Pug E. pulchellata; in Foxglove Pug, the outer edge of the central cross-band is kinked at the costa, while in Toadflax Pug the central cross-band is gently curved at the costa. Larva feeds on Common Toadflax and Snapdragon, often in the capsules, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in woodland, calcareous grassland, embankments and waste ground throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 18-22 mm. The main confusion species is Toadflax Pug E. linariata: in Foxglove Pug, the outer edge of the central cross-band is kinked at the costa, while in Toadflax Pug the central cross-band is gently curved at the costa. Larva feeds within flowers of Foxglove, over-wintering as a pupa.

70.152 [B&F: 1855a] Channel Islands Pug Eupithecia ultimaria Boisduval, 1840 - Nationally Scarce
Recent colonist and immigrant in southern England and on the Channel Islands, predominantly coastal. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight this southern European species first appeared in the county in 1995, and subsequently the larvae were promptly discovered in good numbers on tamarisk on south Hayling, and the following year on the Isle of Wight. Since then, it has been looked for without success on other stands of foodplant along the Hampshire coast. Wingspan 13-17 mm. The most likely confusion species is Thyme Pug E. distinctaria, but smaller and lacking the black fascia of Thyme Pug. Larva feeds on Tamarisk, over-wintering as a pupa.

Nationally scarce (Nb) in open woodland and also in sand-dunes in parts of England and Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight local in woodlands where the foodplant grows, in particular in Pamber Forest and the New Forest. Wingspan 14-15 mm. The main confusion species are Slender Pug E. tenuiata, Haworth's Pug E. haworthiata and Valerian Pug E. valerianata. Larva feeds on flowers of Common Cow-wheat, over-wintering as a pupa.

Local in hedgerows, woodland rides, sea cliffs and gardens, mainly in chalk and limestone districts throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight rarely encountered, mainly on the chalk, with occasional wanderers far from known sources of the foodplant. Wingspan 21-24 mm. Unmistakable. Larva feeds on seed capsules of Sea Campion and Bladder Campion, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in deciduous woodland, especially of oak, but also in hedgerows and gardens throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 19-22 mm. One of the earliest species of pug to emerge in Spring; the brown, nominate form often has a distinct white patch dorsad of the small central dot, but the melanistic form is fairly common, and cannot always be reliably separated from melanistic forms of other pug species. For non-melanistic forms, the most likely confusion species is Oak-tree Pug E. dodoneata, which see for differences. Larva feeds on Pedunculate and Sessile Oak, and Hawthorn, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in oak woodland, mature hedgerows and scrub throughout much of England. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight this species emerges just as Brindled Pug is coming to an end. It is quite common in many places, and appears to have increased and extended its range in the area since the 1950's. Wingspan 19-22 mm. The most likely confusion species is Brindled Pug E. abbreviata, but Oak Tree Pug is smaller and paler, with a more prominent discal spot. Larva feeds on Pedunculate Oak and Hawthorn, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common on moorland and calcareous grassland on native forms of the foodplant, and gardens and parks on cultivated forms throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight fairly widespread, and attached to cultivated juniper as well as the very local wild populations. Wingspan 17-21 mm. Shows a distinctive pale patch distad of the discal spot, and flies early in the year. Larva feeds on Juniper, over-wintering as an egg.

Naturalised through accidental introduction in garden plants, in gardens, parks and plantations throughout much of southern England. First recorded in Britain in Cornwall in 1959. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight following the first record in the county in 1965, this species began to establish itself on the Isle of Wight and along the mainland coast from 1973. It is now quite common and has spread inland at least as far as Basingstoke. Wingspan 18-22 mm. Unmistakable. Larva feeds on Monterey Cypress, Leyland Cypress and Lawson's Cypress.

Local in woodland, hedgerows, marshes and fens, and on roadside verges throughout much of England and Wales; widespread and reasonably common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 17-21 mm. Easily identified by the presence of white spots on termen of both fore- and hindwings, on side of abdomen, and on back of thorax. Larva feeds on Wild Angelica, Elder, Cow Parsley, Hogweed, Wild Parsnip and Wild Carrot, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in plantations, gardens and parks throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 16-19 mm. Despite the name, a medium-sized pug, with a large, prominent, elongated discal spot, but otherwise rather plainly marked, the most likely confusion species is probably Oak-tree Pug E. dodoneata, which has a number of black dashes along the veins beyond the discal spot, and buff-coloured border alongside the costa and dorsum. Larva feeds on various coniferous trees, including Norway Spruce, Sitka Spruce and Douglas Fir, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in woodland, plantations and parkland throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire, but scarce on the Isle of Wight where last recorded in 1995. Wingspan 19-22 mm. The small, white, raised crest at the distal end of the thorax, round black discal spot, and cross-lines which loop around the discal spot, help to distinguish this large, grey pug from Grey Pug E. subfuscata and Pauper Pug E. egenaria. Larva feeds on European Larch, over-wintering as a pupa.

A rare Red Data Book species, restricted to mature lime woodland in the Wye Valley, and parts of East Anglia. In Hampshire has been recorded in the past from a few sites in the New Forest, but not since 1998, and annual in Northwood Park, Crawley, between 2004 and 2007. The first and so far only Wight record was in 2016. Wingspan 21-24 mm. The main confusion species is Larch Pug E. lariciata, which has sharply angulated postmedian fascia and white spot on crest of thorax. Larva feeds on flowers of Small-leaved Lime, over-wintering as a pupa.

Sandy-grey with a distinctive, undulating, white subterminal fascia. Larva feeds on shoots of Goosefoot and Orache, over-wintering as a pupa.

Wingspan 17-20 mm. One of the more easily recognisable pugs, with sharply angled cross-lines, and unique resting posture, often with hindwings concealed by forewings. Larva feeds on the flowers of various species of Heather, over-wintering as a pupa.

Wingspan 15-18 mm. Sandy-grey colour and elongated discal spot; usually rests with forewing almost covering hindwing. Larva feeds on Scots Pine, over-wintering as a pupa.

Nationally scarce (Nb) along woodland edges and sunken lanes, in central and southern England, with records north to Yorkshire. In Hampshire this beautiful pug has a stronghold north of Winchester, between the Test Valley and Alresford, but is nevertheless rare and elusive. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 18-22 mm. Fairly unmistakable. Larva feeds on Hawthorn, Crab Apple and Apple, over-wintering as a pupa.

Combination of two streaks on costa either side of discal spot and lack of white tornal markings make this a fairly unmistakable species. Larva feeds on flowers of Wild Angelica and Hogweed, over-wintering as a pupa.

In Ireland subspecies hibernica, known as Mere's Pug, occurs on the limestone of the Burren. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight usually found in suburban localities, in association with leylandii, and can be fairly common. Wingspan 20-24 mm. A possible confusion species is Pimpinel Pug E. pimpinellata, which see for differences. Larva feeds on Juniper, Lawson's Cypress and Leyland Cypress, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common on chalk downland, heathland, fens, open woodland and rough ground throughout much of southern England; also on moorland in Scotland (subspecies callunaria) and Shetland (ssp. curzoni). In Hampshire fairly common on the chalk, notably at Broughton Down and Martin Down, with scattered records elsewhere and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 21-23 mm. Larva feeds on Meadowsweet, Common Ragwort, Devil's-bit Scabious, Common Knapweed, Heather and Cross-leaved Heath, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in gardens, saltmarshes, woodland and grassland throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight fairly common to common on waste ground and in woods and large gardens. Wingspan 21-23 mm. The main confusion species is Currant Pug E. assimilata, but Wormwood Pug is larger, with more distinct markings. Larva feeds on Mugwort, Yarrow, Common Ragwort, Wormwood, Sea Aster, Goldenrod and Canadian Goldenrod, over-wintering as a pupa.

Wingspan 17-22 mm. The main confusion species is Wormwood Pug E. absinthiata, which is larger, with more distinct markings. Larva feeds on Hop, Black Currant and Red Currant, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in gardens, hedgerows, scrub, fens, heathland and woodland throughout lowland Britain. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 18-21 mm. Rather nondescript, with inconspicuous or absent central spot and weak cross-lines; pale subterminal line on forewing and pale tornal spot on hindwing the most conspicuous features. Larva feeds on various deciduous tree and shrubs, including Hawthorn, Sallow and Bramble, and herbaceous plants such as Common Ragwort, Yarrow and Hogweed, over-wintering as a pupa.

The main confusion species is Brindled Pug E. abbreviata, which is often nearly over before the first Mottled Pug appears, and has less conspicuous discal spot and black wedges. Larva feeds on Hawthorn, Blackthorn and Dogwood, over-wintering as a pupa.

Nationally scarce (Nb) in waste ground, sand-dunes, shingle beaches, roadside verges and rough grassland, in south-eastern England, predominantly coastal. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight a fairly recent arrival, first recorded in 1951 and now well-established on waste ground near the sea in south-east Hampshire and re-discovered on the Isle of Wight in 1998. Wingspan 19-23 mm. The most likely confusion species is Grey Pug E. subfuscata, but Yarrow Pug has a less rounded forewing and is less uniformly grey. Larva feeds on flowers and seedheads of Yarrow, over-wintering as a pupa.

Nominate form simple to identify with large copper-coloured patch, form cognata, more common in northern populations, has much reduced copper-coloured patch and several cross-lines. Larva feeds on Yarrow and Sneezewort, over-wintering as a pupa.

Larva feeds on Mugwort, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in a wide variety of habitats, from gardens, heathland and woodland, to downland and marshes throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 17-21 mm. A large, grey pug with a small discal spot, one of the commonest species of Eupithecia, and familiarity with this species is the key to the identification of other, less common species; a unicolorous form is very similar to unicolorous forms of Green Pug Pasiphila rectangulata and several other pug species. Larva feeds on various woody plants, including Hawthorn and Blackthorn, and herbaceous plants, including Ragwort and Yarrow, over-wintering as a pupa.
